Pro-democracy demonstrations in Egypt represent a cross-section of Egyptian society by age, education, gender, social class, ethnicity and religion, says UC Riverside women's studies professor Sherine Hafez. That is one of the reasons that the pro-democracy movement is so exciting, says Hafez, a native of Alexandria, Egypt. Women are playing a central role in the movement, which belies the West's perception of veiled women as silent and oppressed, she tells Charter Communications' Brad Pomerance.
