i rebuilt this norton commando, knowing very little about motorcycles, but learning along the way, and repalcing most of the parts that looked worn, or were missing. i timed it statically. the valve clearances are correct. the noise sounds like it's coming from the engine head, but it's hard to tell. if anyone has heard this noise before and knows what it is, please let me know. i don't have any experience with these bikes, so i don't know really know where to start (piston slap? improper timing? something wrong with bad rockers/valves? pinging? no clue). i'm dying to ride this thing, but i don't even want it running at idle with that damn noise.

  • Have you sorted this problem yet?

  • Réglage des culbuteurs admissions et échappements..

    C'est pas grave

  • @harryt140e

    My mistake. It's now been 3 years 8 months.

    @dirtdress

    C'mon mate, don't bail out now.

  • @pw3cam yeah, vid was posted quite some time ago soit would be nice for all who responded with advice to find out what the problem was....

  • I'm not a you tuber, saw this by accident. Mis- matched lifters. Don't ride. Barrels off, clean lifters thoroughly. Get/ borrow a dial gauge and swap them around until you have two pairs with the same OD. Go to speed shop get cam lube. Lube cleaned tunnels, lifters and cam, don't hold back. Beveled edges of the pairs must face the cam. They should fit in either tunnel if there's no damage. Maybe some cam noise too. Any movement cam in bush must replace. Good luck

  • 2 years 7 months further down the line...have you found the problem or corrected that valve clearance?

  • if only the current nortons where less expensive

  • Small end bush or maybe even valve gear trouble. Strip the top end and check before it throws it's guts. Check valve clearence first though (cos it's easy).

  • This is probably late, and may be wrong - but if you took the oil lines off of the oil tank and put them on in reverse, that could be your trouble. Make sure the oil returns by removing the plugs and kicking the bike over while watching the oil return through the return tube just below the cap. Good luck.

  • remove pushrod covers, see if it lubes ok.
