@maisler Once you burn for de-orbit you are committed to landing somewhere with only one chance. The 3 main rocket engines are only used for launch. Their fuel tank is jettisoned after that. So the answer is no. The orbiter is a glider on landing with one shot to land.

@amgen52 what would happen if the pilot for some reason had to abort the landing? can they pull back up, reignite the engine and go around for another try at landin?

@thebrowntrainer There is a speed brake on the rudder and regular hydraulic brakes on the gear. The chute was added in 1994 to help releave stress on the gear and brakes. It is not required for landing. And remember, the shuttle is a glider on landing. There are no engines running.

@TheOscarrek isnt edwards one of the landing spots for the shuttle, i think there are three, one in florida, texas, and somewhere else
