Some or most of the damages in Shin-Urayasu Japan were caused by soil liquefaction during the earthquake. It is a phenomenon whereby saturated soil substantially loses strength and stiffness in response to the earthquake's shaking, resulting the soil behaving like liquid. Result of this is water and soot coming up from the asphalt, manholes/sewers popping out of the ground, ground level sinking and other damages as seen in this video.
