Hi all
Second preview on importing wow models into Maya. In the next video I willl explain how to do.

You will need 2 basic things: first a World of Warcraft 3.3 patch ( wow wotlk 3.1 or 3.2 will probably works too), and the second program is a copy of WoW Model Viewer, downloadable at wowmodelviewer org
When you have installed them, you will only have to open wowmodelviewer and chose a character or instance that you want to import into Maya (or in another 3d application). Save it in .FBX file or just .OBJ file. Than just open this file with Maya & enjoy : )

If you are interested on import wow models into Maya I recommend to start download the WoW 3.3 patch (and the previous 1.x and 2.x) because it's the longer thing to do

  • As concernd 3ds yes, use Milkshape 3D, it's a quite useful import/export program

  • How did you import the models, I've saved them as .fbx and then tried to import them and the program encounters an error and shuts down.

  • @ShrinkmasterX

if a file crash during the import you cannot import .FBX for that character. You can only open the file in .OBJ mode (without skeleton and animations).

In general I found that models called ''creatures'' in WowModelViewer list can be imported on Maya in booth .OBJ & .FBX mode, ''characters'' can only be imported as .OBJ file.

  • Maya hates autodidates =.= Everything I try to load does not come with the textures and I have no Idea how to load the textures into the models, it's so unfriendly, unlike MMD >.>

  • is it possible to import these models with or without animation into 3ds max or unity 3d?

  • Nice but this is blizzard models

    show us ur models :P

  • where can i download some .m2 file/wow model !?

  • @yArietis

I just tried it. Its pretty easy to rig in maya :))

  • @wackyLegends

Cool i want to see your anim, now :)

  • @Ragkid

Yes you can animate the models as you want i tried it :)

  • Whenever I try to import a .FBX file, it seems to import a skeleton for each animation which messes the whole thing up as it's impossible to work with it. I'm very new to the program though. But how can I load it in as just one skeleton and easily use the different animations?

For me that’s fascinating. It’s impressive how a good texture can smooth a low polygonal model, it makes the difference
