UNICEF recently ranked Sweden as the best country in which to give birth to a child. Sierra Leone was ranked bottom. But what about the UK?

This video also shows how far the UK lags behind in child mortality and maternal mortality. Throwing money at the problem is certainly one solution, but is that really enough to achieve what Swedes take for granted - safe childbirth and a society that embraces and respects parents and their children?

I suggest that we need a complete change of attitude - starting with ourselves.

Here's a way we can bring that about:

Every time we hear politicians proposing something, whatever it may be, let's ask ourselves (and them) this simple question:

How would it affect children?

Whenever a decision is being made, ask:
How will it affect children?

When you go to vote, ask:
How will it affect children?

It's amazing how this simple question can change everything - causing us to change priorities and abandon previously held convictions.

As the first step to a more humane and caring society in the UK, let's challenge ourselves and all policy makers, businesses - anyone with power, with this simple question:

How will it affect children?

  • Excellent vid and very interesting approach to assessing UK healthcare from 2 perspectives - the BBC is outstanding when it comes to this type of reporting.

  • I'm sad!

    ‼‼‼‼

  • only $300 of diffrence that is shocking, thx for the figures

  • The weird thing is that there doesn't seem to be such a huge difference. Here are 2004 figures:

    Sweden: $2825/person & 9.1% of GDP

    UK: $2508/person & 8.1% of GDP

Sweden is a big country with everyone spread out which drives costs up. So to be honest, I don't understand why the NHS is so bad compared to the Swedish system. Maybe people in the UK are in worse health - no exercise, bad diet etc. Or maybe it's mismanagement. I'm not sure.

I like that military service idea!

  • oh health care sorry, yes britains healthcare is becoming a bit of a disaster but i never thought we were that bad i know englands is quite bad compared to scotland 1 in 170 is shocking how much does britain spend on healthcare and how much does sweden spend?

  • Some countries borrow while others lend. Right now, we're borrowing, China & the Middle East are lending.

My point was about UK healthcare rather than the health of Brits - see the stats in this vid about infant mortality, doctors per head etc compared to Sweden.

Yes, we have the best elite soldiers. But imagine if EVERYONE had basic combat skills. Then we'd be like Finns - mean little bastards who pwned both the Russians & Germans in WWII.

Compulsory National Service: I'd vote for that!

    Cheer up!!!

  • not all the uk has bad health we still have the best soldiers in the world but we are starting to get lazy,i dont know if the uk/us are getting money from china and the middle east why would we uk/us make more money than china it would be a bit of an embarrassment if we are
