.NET is a rip-off of Java originally to be Windows-only. Microsoft has failed at eliminating Java with their Embrace, Extend, and Extinguish strategy.
.Net is a platform that "compiles" different languages into code that runs on an interpreter which does "just in time" compilation at runtime into OS calls and machine code.
The just-in-time compilation is why .Net apps look sluggish at times.
The point-and-click development environment you speak of has been around since VB, Delphi, and other Borland/Inprise tools and is not .Net specific.
The .NET shitwork is for pleasing the lazy devilopers, just don't use it, case solved.

Saying ".NET" is "just a framework" doesn't answer the question dude.
