I had the honour of shaking this man's hand, in Cork, Ireland, after an inspirational concert.

Julia Ward Howe, a northerner who was also an abolitionist. Southern slave holding was an abomination of American Liberty. Slavery was recognized as such in the Federalist Papers. The song speaks to last judgement on Ameerica for allowing the travesty that was slavery. Julia Ward Howe would have thought your support of the Southern cause as a blasphemy. Critic Northrup Frye would call your thinking a demonic parody of religion--in other words--the devil's religion or devil worship.
