Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764)
Naïs, pastorale héroïque, 1749
livret/libretto : Louis de Cahusac
The work was commissionned by the Opera to celebrate the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, conclusion of the war of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748).
The prologue, L'Accord des Dieux, an allegory in wich the recent war is represented as the attempt of the Titans and Giants to storm the heavens.
The violent syncopations and pungent dissonances od the Overture, depincting "the Titans cries and tumultuous movements", continues into the forst chorus, to create a lengthy and amazingly powerful opening sequence. The composer had already used this linking of overture and first scene in Zais (1748), anticipating Gluck's "innovations" in this respect.
