Bassets are so easy to get started. Waggin their tails the whole time.

I got a beagle/basset mix and he sometimes howls like that. Namely when the phone rings.

I have a Basset named Gus that does something similar. You just have to give a light "woof" at him and he will sit up, start wagging his tail and rocking back and forth. He will give the "grrrrr" until you tell him to go and then he really goes to town. Lifts his front feet off the ground baying so hard.
