The artificial protozoans can mate, and the progeny gets half of its chromosomes from one parent, the rest from the other parent. There is also spontaneous mutations... The bit about the player being able to change the chromosomes in one individual protozoan is obviously where the player can (but doesn't have to) act as a genetic engineer and test whether he can design a better creature than whet would emerge by natural selection. My review movie is not very complete on these key points...
