Womble Carlyle and Charleston: A History of Success

On May 1, 2011, Buist Moore Smythe McGee P.A. merged with Womble Carlyle. The two firms agreed to form the firm's Charleston, SC office.

History
Buist Moore Smythe McGee P.A. was established on November 16, 1970 with the merger of two of Charleston's oldest law firms - Buist, Buist, Smythe & Smythe and Moore, Mouzon & McGee.

The firm of Buist, Buist, Smythe & Smythe had been one of the oldest continuing law firms in the country. It was founded in 1827 by Richard Yeadon and Charles McBeth, later Mayor of Charleston. McBeth subsequently formed a partnership with Henry Buist under the name of McBeth and Buist and, shortly after the Civil War; the firm became Buist and Buist. The firm of Smythe and Smythe was successor to Smythe, Lee and Frost, and to a law practice, which was founded in 1866 by Augustine T. Smythe, grandfather of two of our founding partners. That firm merged with Buist and Buist in 1962.

Moore, Mouzon & McGee, founded in 1939, had its beginnings with Trenholm, Rhett and Miller, a firm established in the 1890s. That firm evolved over the years into a firm known as Miller, Huger, Wilbur, Miller and Mouzon. B. Allston Moore, father of one of our founding partners, was associated with Miller, Huger for several years in the 1930s before forming a partnership with Harold A. Mouzon, a noted admiralty lawyer who died in 1967.

Buist Moore Smythe McGee P.A. began its partnership at Number 5 Exchange Street, a handsome 19th Century building on the east side of the Charleston peninsula, overlooking Charleston Harbor. As the firm has expanded, so have its offices. An additional building at 12 Exchange Street was acquired in 1981 and a three-story south wing was added to the original building in 1989. In September of 2003, ground was broken for a new expansion, which includes a 10,500 square-foot addition to the firm's existing building, complete with a covered parking area for clients and guests. The firm celebrated the opening of this new addition in April of 2005.
