Welcome to my new All-Sumo channel!

This is a good place to start if you're new to Sumo or to my vlogs about sumo.

If you're a long time subscriber from my main channel - Myargonauts - then welcome back - I hope the upcoming tournaments will be filled with exciting matches.

Here are some of the Sumo terms I go over in this vlog:

rikishi = wrestler
mawashi = silken loincloth worn by the rikishi
dohyo = the raised, clay ring the wrestlers fight in
gyoji = the referee and judges who officiate the matches
banzuke = the ranking list of all the rikishi fighting in a particular tournament
shiomaki = throwing salt at the start of a match to purify the ring and bring the rikishi luck
shikiri = the staredown just before the start of the match
tachiai = the initial charge and clash of the two rikishi

The Top-5 ranks in Sumo:

1. Yokozuna
2. Ozeki
3. Sekiwake
4. Komusubi
5. Maegashira

These top 5 ranks (currently about 42 wrestlers) comprise the upper division (maku-uchi).
Below maku-uchi is the juryo and makushita divisions.

Welcome once again, and feel free to ask questions or leave comments.

Thanks for watching!
-Jason

  • i love the shirt, where did you get it?

  • I bought it online in America about 5 years ago before I came to Japan - it always gets a good reaction here. :)

  • Dude if you can come thru with all the top sumo matches, not the pointless ones then you will be the top sumo god on youtube!!

I am subscibed and waiting to watch.

I spent 11 years in Japan and never missed a basho.

  • Well, I tend to only tape 3 or 4 matches a day and I try to spotlight diff wrestlers among the top guys, but I have my favorites, like Asashoryu and Harumafuji, so I tend to show their matches a little more than others.

    Hope you enjoy the channel.

  • I'll be watching your channel for sure this tournament. I watched all the matches today...rushed home from shopping to see it!

  • cool beans! Let me know next week who you are rooting for.

  • The ring is not pronounced "doh-yo" but rather "do-hyo", you've got the wrong syllable break there...

  • I learn some cool stuff about sumo. When Tokyo I will have to watch some .

    Cheers!

  • He may not rub his face with a towel aggressively or slap his mawashi with "showmanship", but I think when it's "go time"....he does it well :)

But...I will totally agree Asoshoryu is an amazing fighter!

  • He is modest, but boring. He's not an exciting fighter. I do agree with Jason on that point.

  • weee sumo in time for my birthday :D

  • I will indeed. I can already tell you right off the bat that I'm a huge Hakuho fan. I love his style, but more importantly, his modesty as a fighter. My wife is a Hakuho fan as well!
