Mystery L85, born in 1991, is a huge male orca in the Southern Resident orca population. The population is made up of 3 pods J, K and L pods. All together there is only 88 members due to lack of Chinook salmon and toxins in their blubber. These guys are called resident orcas because they really only live in the San Juan islands in Washington State, which is also where I live so I have had time to get to know and recognize them over the years. To give you an idea on how big Mystery is, his dorsal fin is over 5 feet tall and 3 feet across. After he surfaces close to shore he then rolls on his side and puts his pectoral fin in the air.
