Sit back, relax and get ready for an earful of the mighty Nathan-AirChime K5LA as two of the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad's ex-Conrail GP38s make the trip from Crivitz to Green Bay on a Sunday afternoon. With that horn echoing through the northeast Wisconsin forests and hills, you can tell it's Number 400 in the lead from over a mile away.

Scene 1: WIS-22 crossing; Stiles Junction, WI.

Scene 2: County Highway E crossing; Abrams, WI.

Scene 3: Brown Rd. crossing; north of Suamico, WI.

Scenes 4-5: Taking the connecting track to the CN - Lineville Rd. (County Highway M) and Velp Ave. crossings; Howard, WI.

Scene 6: Lakeview Dr./Riverview Dr. crossings and Duck Creek bridge on the CN Marinette Sub; Howard, WI.

See "ELS Meets CN in Green Bay 4/13/2008" for the conclusion of this chase.

  • those cross bucks at 0:59 - 2:27 should have signals and maybe gates too. Why are there only cross bucks?

  • It's a lightly used road. No sense spending the money for signals at a country road with light traffic crossing a branch line with light train traffic. It's a driver's responsibility to stop (as indicated by the signs next to the crossbucks), look, listen and live.

  • Bunch of idiots running the crossing!!! In the 1st scene, what is the cop noise when the truck is running the crossing?

  • That was the siren on the truck. It was sounding it by way of excuse to run the crossing.

  • Nice video! I like the shot at 4:37!

  • Thanks!

  • Hey there guys. The truck that crosses the railroad tracks in the beginning is a Wisconsin DNR forest firefighting truck. If you look it has its red lights on when going over. He was going to a fire when the lights came down.

  • City of Green Bay Police like to do that too when they don't want to sit at a red light late at night. nasty habit of theirs, have seen it many many times!

  • Well thanks for letting me know because it seemed to me that the road had a reasonable amount of traffic instead of being lightly used, thats good to know since otherwise it would rather be unsafe.

  • The conductor and sometimes the brakeman get off to line the switch on the connecting track from the ELS to the CN, then ride the back for the last few miles to the yard so they can re-line the yard switch for the main after the train gets through.
