This is a long video of our yellow lab Toby. Its his first swim after getting his leg amputated. He got hit by a car and it severed the nerve, no broken bones or cuts. The vet gave the nerve in his leg a one in a million chance of regenerating so we knew the odds were slim. He was almost a year old when we had to get his leg amputated. For about a month we struggled with the decision to take the leg off until we came across a few videos of 3 legged dogs that were swimming, running, etc. just like they did when they had 4 legs. Although it was a hard one, watching the videos greatly helped our decision. Hopefully this can help someone if they are wondering if their dog will be able to do the same things they did before and the answer is YES, your dog can be just as happy with 3 legs!!!

  • My dog had an accident two and a half months ago resulting in nerve damage which has caused her to loose the use of one of her front legs. Everyone around me has said to put her down that three legged dogs don't do well. I had decided this morning to put her down, not wanting to be a selfish owner but do what was right for her. Looking at her in tears all morning I took to the web and came across your video and it has changed my mind. Thank you for saving my baby - Jessica says thank you too.

I am so glad that you came across this video. This was originally a hard decision for us until we came across a similar type video ourselves. Once he had the surgery it was as if he still had 4 legs. I was amazed at how well he adapted and your Jessica will too :) If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Also, his leg was amputated back in 2006 and hasn't had any hip or joint issues and still keeps up with our 1 year old lab puppy.

    Thanks,

    Shannon

  • Thank you for posting this video. My retriever just had to have his leg amputated due to cancer, I am afraid he would not be able to swim, your video is showing me that it is possible.

  • I'm sorry to hear that your dog lost his leg to cancer. The reason we put this video up was so that people could see that even with 3 legs, they get around just fine. We were very torn with our decision and after searching all over the internet we finally found a video of a 3 legged dog playing in the ocean and we decided to go ahead with the surgery. It was a hard decision but after seeing that they could still have an active lifestyle that video made it an easy choice. Glad to hear it helped!
