On January 25, 2010, the City of Mt. Pleasant presented a concept plan to the City Commission that would transform Main Street, the city's main corridor between the downtown district and Central Michigan University, into a more pedestrian-friendly, lively environment for families and businesses to thrive in.
The plan is based on the recommendations of Dan Burden, renowned walkability expert and founder of Walkable Communities, who visited with key city staff, residents, retailers, and institutional representatives in Oct. 2009 to help develop the final concept. This plan, titled "The Mt. Pleasant Downtown to Campus Connection Plan," was designed to achieve the objectives that were raised during stakeholder sessions. These included increasing safety; supporting and encouraging social interaction; enhancing the pedestrian experience; and fulfilling the vision of a healthy and prosperous downtown while being affordable and implementable in stages.
