Here is my arrangement of 'Baby Elephant Walk'. Henry Mancini wrote the soundtrack for the 1962 movie 'Hatari' and one song in the soundtrack did very well! Mancini wrote a brief piece of incidental music first used to go with a scene where three baby elephants were taken for a walk. The little song became an international hit as 'Baby Elephant Walk', and has since been recorded by a large number of artists and in many different styles.
----------
A few notes on my arrangement:
The original starts with a short solo flute intro, and I'm just adding the bass line.
The boogie woogie eight-to-the-bar pattern I'm using is not the same as in the piano sheet music, but I find this left hand pattern suitable for a baby elephant walking :-)
I'm playing at around the same pace as the original (120-125BPM).

This is an easy-going song. For a bit of contrast and tension I added some fire to my two solo choruses :-)
----------
The organ is a Clavia Nord C1 - a Hammond B-3 clonewheel organ.

Nord C1 Registrations and Settings:
Upper 88 8000 000. No Chorus. Perc On, Soft, Fast, Third.
Lower 00 8700 000. No Chorus.
Bass lower man. Not used.
Leslie simulator Slow position.
Equalizer not used.
Overdrive not used.
Reverb Hall, Soft, 50%.
Tonewheel mode Vintage 2 (high level of tonewheel crosstalk and cable leakage artefacts).
The sound is recorded line out from the organ. No additional external effects, external amplifiers or speakers are used.

  • Hi rounder....

    this is a great arrangement..

I have also learned the green onions you did on the Yamaha, a year or so back by carefully watching your vid.

Once I was able to do the walking base line with the right hand, i learned it fairly quickly.

Would you say that this version of BEW should be roughly the same difficulty level?

  • Hi tangoaplha

    Thanks!

This version of Baby Elephant Walk has a more difficult left hand (e.g. with anticipation before some bars), compared to my Yamaha Green Onions version.

But, and this is a very important 'but' :-) Since you have learned/ingrained one left hand bass line pattern, you will also have "learned how to learn". This means that your learning curve will be faster for the next walking bass line pattern, if it's not totally more difficult. So go for it!

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Right on!

  • Thanks karlknoop!

  • Henry would approve, I'm sure.

Thanks for an excellent performance/arrangement.... and so MUCH information on how it was done. (Very generous of spirit.)

  • Thanks effyleven!

Good to hear that you also like my additional text. I provide extra text for my videos in case it might be of help regarding sound settings, drawbar registrations, etc.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Hi Wimpy Fruit

    Thanks!

Start by learning the boogie woogie left hand bass line, until it is totally ingrained and you hardly have to think about it.

Then start adding the right hand. Phrase after phrase. But always keep the left hand in control.

The left hand is the Boss in jazz organ.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Holy crap! I must become like you!!

  • Hi mrslig

    Is that so?

Maybe it is because of me scaring away prospective customers :-)

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Search the internet and you will soon discover that rounder2u is the only person in existence with one of these organs.

half the pages for them are about him 0_o
