@RobNYNY1957 Let's be specific. In his last broadcast live performance of this role in 1948 (age 58) he continued to sing all the notes as written. Although some notes were not held as long he had formerly held them he still made No transpositions and there were No missing high notes. I'm not sure what you mean about his simplifying the vocal line but the accuracy of his singing in his later performances is perfectly clear.

This is the best I've heard him sing this. In later performances, as his voice lost flexibility, he had to greatly simplify the vocal line to get through it.
