1988 Mercury Cougar XR7 exhaust sound

1988 Mercury Courgar exhaust sound. Stock exhaust which consist of dual catalitics, to a Y pipe to a single middle pipe, and then Y pipe to 2 mufflers which =One is a flowmaster 40 and one is a thrush turbo which each has its own outlett tail pipes. Everything on the car is stock except a MSD coil. The 5.0 car has 171,000 miles on it. Not the roller motor like the mustang GT has. Video skips due to camera fugi a-350.

cougars are cool. yea they had the 5.0 option in the xr7s .tho the horse power was low as they were not the H O motors mustangs got. I have an 86 cougar . The gearing is horrible in the cougars mine came with a factor trac loc rear and god awful 3:08 gears

I think mine has 3:25 gears.

did cougar make a 2.3L turbo? like the 1988 ford thunderbird turbo coupe?

I can't be sure of that one. I could look at a 88 cougar dealer brochure. Iv'e seen a tunderbird 2.3 tubo coupe. I think many cougars had a V6. Many parts were interchangeable. Even the gas tank stuff was specific to only a few years.

@gotomgo69 The gear set in the cougar is ideal for the S.O 5.0's powerband. The 5.0 runs out of power at like 4K rpm, but it makes boatloads of torque in that range, only 25-30 less than the H.O. BTW, if you have an 86 5.0, you're running 2.73's. 3.08's were a "sport" option.

@wissn2112 they only came from factory with  3:08 or 2:73 gears 7.5 inch rear end or 8.8 inch

I had the 8.8 rear end on my 86 cougar 5.0 it had the 3:08 gears I put 3:73 gears in and that made a nice difference!!!

yes they did. as well as later super coupes and earlier xr 7 turbo cars 83 - 87 cars DID have 5.0 as option in xr 7cars
