now I understand the designation, thanks.

Paul was the original music director for Belushi and Aykroyd, and played at all their live Blues Brothers shows. I'm sure it came from the SNL relationship.
But when it came time to film the movie he was stuck in a contract to do a live show with Gilda Radner at the same time. So he couldn't get out of the contract to be in the film.
I said semi because he wasn't in the original movie cast and he's now listed as being a 'former member', but was around for the start in '78 to at least '98.

Well if you're considering that Paul was part of the SNL band that would make him part of the original and not semi-original band.
I'm sure there will be something about that time in Paul's autobiography when he finishes it.

Paul was a semi-original band member. He was the sound director on the movie, and was with the original band on many of the live shows they did.

No one has mentioned Paul Shaffer on keyboard. Also very nice to see most of the original band members there backing Dana again.

I love Elwood J. Blues! He's my favortie in the band!
