would my old gaming PC power supply (1000W) be able to do this?

@PAINmedia PC power supplies usually only offer DC output at 3.3V, 5V, and 12V. You need high voltage at good current to do this as sand is an insulator until it heats up and melts. An arc must be drawn to length under the sand to do this. At least an MOT would be required, better at least two MOT's in series. MOT's are lethal if the slightest mistake is made with them.

That's pretty awesome! I play around with high voltage from time to time, and I would love to try this. What kind of power supply did you use?
Thanks!

@Ant42Lee
This was a self-made transformer. I took 6 x MOT, cut the "E" and "I" core sections apart, and took the primaries and secondaries off the cores. I then took two "E" cores and put one primary and two secondaries on with upgraded insulation, and welded them back together giving a 4kV unit. I put three of these in series under oil. Ballasting is on the secondary (HV) side by means of microwave oven capacitors in series. 120V input is off a 60A breaker. Lethally powerful, lots of fun !
