The hopeless romantic in me runs rampant again. I just had to play homage again to the wonderful screen team Rita Hayworth (1918-1987) and Glenn Ford (1916-2006), who starred in five films together - "The Lady In Question" (1940), "Gilda" (1946), "The Loves Of Carmen" (1948), "Affair In Trinidad' (1952) and "The Money Trap" (1965). They had a close relationship from the time they met in 1937 until the late 70s when Rita's accelerating Alzheimer's disease required her to receive round the clock care in New York. During her last years in Hollywood, Glenn was her next door neighbor and frequent visitor. When Rita passed away in 1987, Glenn served as pallbearer. "I've lost my best friend in the whole world." he lamented. Ford kept a photo of Rita with a fresh rose until his passing in 2006. And he spoke of Rita coming to him in his dreams saying that she would meet him on the other side. "They're probably dancing among the stars just as they did in life", an insider said upon Glenn's death.

So here is my tribute to Rita and Glenn, I hope wherever they are they can see it. I colorized some of the photos and used Les Baxter's Orchestra and Chorus version of "Unchained Melody". Note that this version is shorter than other variations of the song, but I thought it suited the photos and clips perfectly. This is kind of a replacement for my Spanish Harlem Rita and Glenn tribute, since youtube blocked the audio. It was especially upsetting considering Glenn's grandson complimented me on it and said that his parents enjoyed it. Oh well, this video is a pretty good effort, if I do say so myself!

Clips from:

"Gilda" (1946)
"The Loves Of Carmen" (1948)
"Affair In Trinidad" (1952)

Enjoy!

  • Loved the video! I just have a question, where did you get the quote from Glenn Ford on Rita dying? I've been looking for it because I love it but I can't find it...

  • @beachbumm591 , you can find that quote in the book, "Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective" by Caren Roberts-Frenzel. Amazon carries it. Thanks for the comment!

  • Bravo!wonderful tribute to a great couple.Their chemistry together onscreen is second to none and by all accounts they were close friends in real life and Glenn adored her.Beautiful video.

  • These two were smoking hot on the screen even when they were just looking at each other. I have all their movies together except "The Money Trap". I've seen it but don't think I have a copy. My favorites of their movies are "Affair in Trinidad" and "Gilda", of course. Rita has always been one of my favorites so I have an extensive Rita collection. I remember when Rita became ill, she lived next door to Glenn, and she used to fight with him for no reason. He was baffled. Poor Guy. Thanks!

  • The song and video go so well together. Glenn and Rita go together as well. I love watching both of them together. I wished that they would have hooked up in real life.

Thank you Muirmaiden for the beautiful song and video.

  • Congratulations for this video!!! i love Rita and Glenn's couple, they were a very good friends, but I've heard that glenn was whole his life so in love with Rita, but she always saw him just like a brother, is this true?

  • Muirmaiden, thank you so much for posting this beautiful and poignant tribute. That min-biography is a real heartbreaker. I hope Glenn and Rita are together again -- young, healthy and beautiful forever.

  • Wonderful tribute! I loved Rita and Glenn together or screen, they had so much chemistry together, it's also obvious how much he cared for her, so sweet <3
