A group of engineering students may have the solution to Cambodia's water crisis, unveiling today their design for a simple, low-cost water meter to be installed in piped-water systems in the rural Kandal province.

Leah Bygraves, Waihoong Tan, Oskar Schwab and Ashleigh Tomkins (The Planeteers), in conjuction with Engineers without Borders (EWB), have designed a water meter to measure water usage which will act as a conservation tool and aid in the combating of water-bourne illnesses.

An installed water meter in piped-water systems is required in order to receive funding from international aid agencies.

The team are aiming to source the materials and labour for their meter locally and have devised a payment scheme, making it affordable for all Cambodians.
