A quick and dirty guide to installing and running RPG Maker XP under Mac OS X via Wineskin.

For those who prefer text:

Download and install Wineskin.
Launch it, and create a new wrapper.

When asked, install Gecko, then run the wrapper you just made,
click Install Windows Software, and locate your SetupMenu.exe file.

Install the RTP, then the actual program, and set RPGXP.exe as the launch file.

Next, right click the wrapper you made, and click show package contents
to open its contents in a Finder window.

Navigate to /drive_c/windows/Fonts/, and copy all of your Mac's preinstalled
Arial fonts into this folder (the fonts can be found in /Library/Fonts/).

Give the wrapper an icon if you like, and then launch it.
RPG Maker XP should open just as it does on Windows,
and you can run the trial, or enter your license.

Known bugs:
No sound. (Likely fixable by installing required files -- don't ask me how)
Program may lock up/crash if maximized. So umm. Don't do that.

  • For anyone that's been having trouble with the sound I have a (sort of solution). It's to do with the file type and the fact that the music files for RMXP are in .midi format which does not always work properly in Mac. I've found that if you export the files they will play fine using the finder preview but not in RMXP. The only fix I've figured (so far) is to convert them to MP3 files and then re-inport them but this makes the files larger, thus making the game file larger in the end...
