I have changed my mind, since I have found much more information:
I no longer believe that global warming is caused mainly by increased carbon dioxide. The planet IS changing temperature in some ways, but its cause is way different from what is being pushed in the media now. Each planet has its own special orbit, tilt, and movment in space, and the earth's relationship to the sun, and other radiation sources and factors; is varying in cycles - so each planet rises and falls in temperature, in its own special cycle, on its own special timing. (for example, what's happening on Jupiter or Mars, is not what's happening on earth.) Humans do not have the power to alter the warming and cooling trends of this planet - it is all about natural cycles that we need to ADAPT TO. Remember, the world has experienced hot and cold ages before, without man causing it (Ice Age, etc). The earth has certainly warmed up since then without the man-introduced carbon to cause it. However, petroleum and coal are both still toxic and nasty, and we need to replace them entirely with green, safe fuels as soon as possible.

Amazingly, the super-high cost of fuel now, is increasing interest in developing alternative fuels that are NON-FOOD CROPS, and do not compete with the production of food. Over $4.00 a gallon for fuel, eh? Well THAT factor will have many people working to develop alternative fuels! This is what we've been waiting for - petroleum is now offically economically unfeasible.

We can get all the fuel oil we need or want, from growing algae and
converting it into carbon neutral
fuel for vehicles, and heating homes.
Petroleum fuel is economically non-feasible, so
producing biodiesel locally will be
one answer to this problem.
Besides, petroleum is bad for human
health, and is destroying the earth.

One last thought: We should be driving electric cars in the city, anyway. That way, bio fuel, hydroelectric, and wind electrical power can power our cars. One major advantage to electric cars, is that they do not emit toxic exhaust for us all to breathe - all the burning fuels would be far away from the city, instead of being pumped into the city, (like it is now from the exhaust of every engine!).

UPDATE:
(AUG 2, 2008)
A new milestone was reached recently in the race to make fuel from algae a conventional oil alternative: high-octane gasoline that is compatible with any gas-guzzling vehicle. The feat was performed by Sapphire Energy, a company that manufactures "green crude". Sapphire uses single-cell algae to produce a chemical mixture that contains extractable fuel for cars and other transport vehicles. While the green crude is chemically identical to crude oil, it is completely carbon neutral.

The algal energy doesn't require the use of agricultural land and water, and it deliver 10 to 100 times more energy per acre than crop-based biofuels. The company hopes that their green crude will ultimately be injected into normal crude pipelines.

Fortunately for consumers, Sapphire isn't the only company looking into "Oil 2.0". Silicon Valley company LS9 is working on genetically modifiying single cell organisms to excrete carbon neutral oil. Like Sapphire's green crude, the LS9 oil will also work in conventional vehicles.

Whether these efforts come to fruition as oil replacements remains to be seen—and it mostly hinges on questions of efficiency. But we should find out soon. Sapphire expects to start producing their green crude within 3 to 5 years.

  • Unless it can be privatized to death, algae for oil will suffer nearly the same fate as hemp for oil. I say both hemp and algae are great. Neither one of them use up so much land and both of them are carbon neutral. Plus, think of all the plastics that can be made from those two. Hey, how about man-made but environmentally friendly? And get me some nylons made from light sweet green crude, please. My wife and I will love 'em. :)

  • hi drex801,

Yes, it is hard to tell if the human race has enough will-power to adapt to new fuels. It will take multiple and major paradigm shifts.

We need cleaner fuels badly just for cleaner breathing, but please research the carbon stuff - the whole "man-made global warming because of carbon footprint" idea is extremely questionable to me. Many scientists do not believe in the man-made global warming theory. Thanks for your belief in algal and hemp fuels!

  • My question is, why are we as a nation pushing an energy policy that is the equivalant to farts and sunshine (wind and solar) when avenues such as algae to gasoline, biodiesel or biobutanol is not being pushed as heavily as it could be? Could it be that the answer to this question is related to why the Obama team put a socialist in the global warming czar position?

  • hi scrappmutt2,

Things don't make sense in the directions we're taking as a human race, oftentimes because many industries are afraid of competition, so they attempt to STOP their competition in different ways. This behavior is destructive, and inhibits progress. Anyone who attempts to inhibit scientific and other progress in these ways, must feel a lot of shame when looking into the mirror.

Concerning Obama - and all politicians - they sure know how to milk the left-right manipulation, eh?

  • I hope Algae oil takes over the energy market SOON.

But I bet the Big Oil will do anything they can to stop this.

  • hi raidnkill,

it seems that if Big Oil keeps their oil / gas prices adjusted to where people can "make it", and it is somewhat acceptable in price, there is less likely to be changes made in what fuels we use. Still, anything is possible, though!

  • So why is the government investing money in fantasies like hydrogen rather than putting a "Manhatten Project" together on algae biodiesal (vertical closed systems) that would be a total game changer and not require a totally new infrastructure like the hydrogen economy fantasy. Do that and give people tax incentives for solar roofs on their houses, for buying pluggable serial hybrids and you are done. Zero import of Mid-East oil, no money for terrorists or nuclear programs in those countries.

  • keeping product and money in your local economy is good for you and your neighbors, and not for the mindless control of shareholders trading in a cannibalistic economy that we currently have. instead of mining sunlight energy captured millions of years ago in biomass deep beneath war torn middle eastern countries we can do it in our time to the same effect but a hell of allot cleaner

  • Perhaps Sapphire is the source of the censorship.

The 5 year delay may have already guaranteed nuclear war between the USA and China over the remaining crude oil. Since a factual strategic and tactical analysis shows that China would easily win this war, with most of their population intact, while the USA would be annihilated, I would prefer not to witness or experience it.

Rapid implementation of the speedbox is the only means of avoiding this outcome, assuming that it still can be avoided.

  • It is frightening how pathetic Sapphire Energy's slime fuel project is as compared to my project. Mine costs 1/9th as much and produces somewhere between 5.4 times (based on their original prospectus) and 981 times as much (based on their recent web interview production estimates) usable fuel.

But more frightening is that they managed to connive $400 million in grants and loans guarantees, where I get beat down almost? into the ghetto, and suffer a 5 year delay due to internet censorship.

  • Can you make it out of duckweed? That stuff grows like wild fire.

  • The problem is the algal fuels are made currently, but the price is ridiculously sky high, the price per gallon needs to come down a lot to make it economic, since at the current price noone could buy.

  • Hasn't Exxon invested something like $600m into LS9 one of the companies currently developing this?

  • I'm waiting for the day ( most likely dead by then ) when the world starts cooling down for another ice age, I'm guessing it will be our fault for that!!

The earth warms up and cools down, Fact!

Earth has seen many ice ages and will continue todo so as well as warming up it's the cycle.

The biggest menace to the world are governments, they want your money and will do or prevent or make up anything to get your cash.

That's the truth in a nut shell!

  • @drex801 carbon footprint isn't bullshit in a chemical state.

Your absolutely correct about EPA agencies being in bed with big oil. Permits and fines are a steady asset for them.

  • @kbs1138 you mean no more U.S. military involvement to dictate foreign governments for U.S. interests. Since WWI the military has been used and abused for this purpose.
