At any committee hearing for the Louisiana state House, they hand out cards. Red ones are for opposition, green cards are for support. The supporters of HB587 had more children under the age of 18 in their crowd than they had adults, and many of us were wondering if they were having their children fill out the green support cards. This video answered our question on that.
To be allowed to speak at the hearing, you have to fill out a support card and specify that you wish to speak. So when the chairwoman calls the name of a 16-day-old baby to come to the table to speak, it means that she has a support card with that baby's name on it. Is this in keeping with committee rules? Probably not, I didn't ask. Is it ridiculous? Yes. Is it being emotionally manipulative and attempting to inflate their numbers using minors who can't even vote? Absolutely!
