Martina Arroyo sings Verdi's Aida Act I Aria "Ritorna Vincitor". The Amneris snippet at the beginning is sung by none other than Grace Bumbry. Metropolitan Opera House February 24, 1973 Matinee Broadcast
I found Ms. Martina and she is as marvelous as remembered. This great artist was somewhat overshadowed by Price at the Met and in the media, she was a very witty , amusing intelligent artist . Her blazing talent could not be ignored. Anyone who heard her fabulous voice never forgot her .
@Operaaddict I agree..its like they disappeared, I think Great Leontyne Price might have been the last black woman to sing Aida at the Met [don't quote me]..I don't think there is much of any talent nowadays...but they always say history repeats itself, I think soon we will not only see a surge in GREAT blk singers[men/women but we will also see a surge in great operatic singers around the board. I'm 25 and an aspiring opera singer, hopefully my generation will bring the fire back!
What a great performance! And now, not ONE African American diva at the Met.
Not ONE. In the '70's, we were blessed with so many beautiful black soloists. What the hell happened? I can't believe that there aren't many who are very qualified.
I gotta recognize black ladies (Leontyne, Martina and Grace) are totally owners of Aida. Those voices were amazing. Sadly only Leontyne has the deserving recognition. Varrett, Arroyo, Grace are easily top 10 ever voices!

@Operaddict There's not much of anything at the Met these days besides hyped up physically attractive people who can't sing.
