Calico Kills the Cat was recorded by Calvin Johnson and Pat Maley in Olympia, Washington in 1989. Mecca Normal's second LP, it is often thought to be the first because the first LP was released on Mecca Normal's own label, Smarten UP! Records (1986). Calico Kills the Cat came as an LP on K Records and then, some years later, Matador released it as double CD with Water Cuts My Hands, Mecca Normal's third album (the second LP with K Records). When the rights to digital versions returned to Mecca Normal from Matador, Smarten Up! Records made Calico, Water, Snaps, Eagle and Elvis available on iTunes (with some songs popping up on Bandcamp).
