Video of Joel Beckwith and Kathy Carpenter's Backpacking trip to Grand Canyon by way of Sowat's Point and Kanab Creek, May 2009. The music was recorded on my computer using Audacity for multitracking through a Zoom H2 in Manset Maine. The instruments are a Taylor Big Baby Guitar which is very beat up and has many miles on the back deck of a kayak, a Gold Tone Tenor Banjo, a $100.00 Johnson Mandolin and a Toca Djembe'. The first tune is called "Taken so Much Time" and was written in the Patapsco State Park Near Sykesville. The second tune is called Joel's Jig and was written sitting on a sand dune watching a comet, (Hale something) at Assateague National Sea Shore.

  • Great video.. How long did this trip take you? Did you see any wildlife? I have so many questions. I really enjoyed the video! Thank you

  • The trip took 7 days. We saw Big horn sheep, Grand Canyon Rattlesnakes, Lizards all over, Ducks on the river, several species of fish in Kanab and the Colorado. Ravens eating Kathys food, (they always get her). Canyon wrens and many other birds. We started at Sowats Point and came out at Indian Hollow. So glad you enjoyed it. It was so much fun to make. The trip was the best backpack of my 37 years of Backpacking!

  • Great Video! Good music too.

  • Utterly fantastic, my dear! Let's go again!

  • well I just like the others here enjoyed your video. I have been to the canyon twice now, but only hiked once & it was a short 1 day hike. what I have seen in your video shows me how much I have missed on the times I have been there. thanks for both of you sharing your time on the trails @ the Grand Canyon.

  • Brought back great memories of backpacking with my ex-significant other. We sure had some adventures. So many wonderful, yet dangerous places to see with your "house on your back"

    Great video. Thank you.

  • What a great video. Music also very fitting and enjoyable! Hoping to go in the late spring of 2011. Thanks for sharing your hike!!!
