  • Simply cannot stop watching this, love the music the dance. For those of you who were asking this style is Varanasi/Benares Gharana, it is not Jaipur. I really am quite speechless when I see this and hear the music which is hypnotic especially combined with the voice of their Guru, deepest respect to Guru Jitendra and his disciples the Delhi Sisters. Tripmonk thanks for these wonderful clips.

  • @Zobeeda Are you REALLY sure this is NOT Jaipur as it was said on several recordings I have of the Delhi Sisters?? It's certainly NOT Lucknow as i did that style!

    Nick

  • Wow!!! Incredibly energetic and atheletic.... like Krishna! Is this of the Benares gharana?

  • Delhi Gharana, I believe!

    Nick

  • Really? I assume the lucknow gharana and jaipur gharana are distinctive in part due to the outfit(s) worn by the female dancers. The dancers in the clip are wearing clothes that look like what the female dancers from the Jaipur gharana wear.

  • It could be Jaipur bit it's certainly not Lucknow as this style tends to do more abhinaya rather than lots of footwork like this piece.

Pt Birju Maharaj is Lucknow as was my teacher in the 80s.

  • Who is playing Violin

  • @tripmonk0 and yeah Nick it does seem to be banaras gharana, i just lookd up jitendra maharaj, the guy that made up this dance, and his expertise is banaras gharana kathak

  • @tripmonk0 Nick, I would really love to see one of your performances! You have an extremely awesome sense of chosing which videos to put up on youtube. But in terms of lucknow gharana being all about abhinaya, that isn't always true, as you could see from Chitresh Dasji's style as well as shambhu maharaji's style of dancing! Who was your guru

  • WOW!!! beautiful and what skill from all.

  • The guru simultaneously creeps me out and makes me chuckle. How bizarre!

  • These are Nalini-Kamalini from the Benaras Gharana.

  • The Delhi Sisters are well known proponents of the Benares Gharana as is Guru Jetindran Maharaj. All three gharanas, Lucknow, Benares and Jaipur use the same types of costumes which were popular fashionable dress for ladies in the 17th and 18th century. Benares gharana has distinctive and subtle footwork, hops, skips and even high jumps and a characteristic back kick of the leg. They also portray a lot of dances showing a particular mood or scenario, like billowing clowds, of a Puja dance.
