**update: to see Sandee's weaves outdoors see videos addingspeedtoweaves & weaveentrypractice** To see her perform weaves independently under trial conditions, see video NoviceSkills during an AKC Novice JWW trial.

So last week at class I was asked if I'd started training weave poles yet with my almost 13 month puppy.
Well, after reviewing Susan Garretts 2x2 DVD (I highly recommend it), and preparing my plans I started with a single 2x2 (2 poles) on Friday.
Couldn't get out to a park to practice on grass as little league just started claiming all the fields.
So with the limited space we haven't yet followed through everything as detailed, but I wanted to see if Sandee, my pup could do 6 in time for the next class.
This video gives a glimpse into the training method used.
Not to bore everyone many sections are in fast forward mode.
The video comes to an end with Sandee performing 6 weave poles in class.
We still have more work to do to proof her understanding, pick up some speed & hopefully find some grass to practice on.
If you search on YouTube you'll find some instructional videos claiming it will take many months if not years to train weave poles... though not perfected yet, Sandee learned to perform the obstacle in only 2 hours over 5 days!
Since the behavior has not been perfected yet, no name has yet been given to perform this obstacle.

  • Thanks so much for this very instructional video. I see a lot of weave work on YouTube but it's great to see a dog learning the process from the start. The speeded up/normal speed editing works very well. What is that awesome treat thing you're giving her?

  • @NormyPie Susan Garretts 2x2 Weave pole DVD set is a great choice to get insight into this process she created & she explains what to do in great detail. I highly recommend it. We didn't follow everything exactly (or completely) & this video is just a glimpse into the very beginning intro work. We worked on speed later as seen in other videos.

I'm using a dog bait bag/tug toy: it's velcro opens up to reveal treats & also has a toy squeaker to make it more interesting.

  • @SpunkySaysWoof Wow! It took me ages to find a treat bag/tug toy online! I had a vague recollection of having seen one before and I found it again, but it was from US and postage is prohibitive as I'm in UK. Found ~one~ UK site that sells them (a specialist schnauzer one of all things - and I'd been looking at general and retriever websites!) and now have one on order. Thanks :o)

  • @SpunkySaysWoof Thanks! I discovered Susan's DVD after your video inspired me to go poking about for stuff on 2x2s. It's very expensive here in the UK so I will be saving up for it (and some 2 x 2s!). Gonna have to get one of those bait bag toys - best of both worlds!

  • Well aren't you just a keener? LOL! Good job! I just started my dogs in agility and our instructor seems to just lure them through so we'll see how that goes.

  • @bostonterrier333 the boston on your channel seems to be doing weaves just fine... speed will come with confidence. Maybe you have more than one dog?
