THE TROUBLE WITH HAZELWOOD
Welcome to Victoria home of Australias dirtiest power station. Its Hazelwood Power Station and its located in the Latrobe Valley right here in Victoria. It has the distinction of being not just the dirtiest power station in the country, but one of the worst in the industrialised world.
Now thats a distinction we dont need.

DID YOU KNOW:
· Hazelwood pumps out over 16 million tonnes of greenhouse pollution each year. Thats almost 15 percent of Victorias greenhouse gas emissions and 3 percent of Australias greenhouse gas emissions, all on its own.
· It uses a whopping 27 billion litres of water a year. Thats almost as much water as the whole of Melbourne uses in a month!
· It's the single largest emitter of dioxins in Australia.

Back when it was first commissioned in 1959, the workers who were building it arrived at work in FJ Holdens. But since then, weve seen some major technological breakthroughs.
We've put a man on the moon. Our computers have gone from the size of a room, to fitting in the palm of your hand. And we certainly dont drive FJ Holdens any more.
We've invented new technologies that can guarantee reliable power straight from the sun and the wind. Yet here in Victoria, were still relying on this decaying old power station for our energy.
Hazelwood was due to be shut down in 2005. Instead, the government decided to continue with this ancient technology. It's old, inefficient and way past its used-by-date.
We can Replace Hazelwood with clean, safe and reliable energy for the future, and we can do it within the next two years.

WHY NOW?
This year, we have a big opportunity to Replace Hazelwood and set Victoria and Australia on the path to a clean energy future.
With a state and federal election both timed for later this year, now is the time to make the call for all parties to commit to Replace Hazelwood with Clean Energy by 2012.
Following the Rudd Governments back flip on their commitment to act on climate change through an Emissions Trading Scheme, the State and Federal Governments desperately need to show Australians that they're prepared to tackle our climate challenge. Replacing Hazelwood is their big opportunity to show leadership, cut pollution, and deliver real climate action.
The owners of Hazelwood, International Power, can also see the writing on the wall. They've told the Federal Government in a submission that they would be willing to close early if paid to do so.
It's time to Replace Hazelwood.
2010 is an election year. That puts the average voter in a power position.
This election, lets make sure all parties commit to Replace Hazelwood with Clean Energy by 2012.

MAKE IT HAPPEN

  • We have the opportunity to show the world how to reduce emissions. The ZCA2020 plan produced by Melbourne Uni promises to reduce emissions, create tens of thousands of jobs and reduce the average Aussie electricity bill to just $8 per week. Don't believe me? watch?v=qImNRuV4G0Q

  • · It uses a whopping 27 billion litres of water a year. Thats almost as much water as the whole of Melbourne uses in a month!

And it's pumped back into the lake and re-used. Do you even know how the lake + power station work or are you just trying to make people believe in your cause?

  • Hazelwood Pondage isn't going anywhere. It's owned by the chinese and they wouldn't invest in something they know will fail. If they shut it down the government would have to pay them millions and millions of dollars in compensation. The government does not have money to wave around.

Point 2; we didn't put a man on the moon, it was a hoax.

Final summation : It isn't going to happen.

  • Carbon dioxide is a null issue, the real problem with brown coal is the other contents - Arsenic, Thorium, Mercury... dumped straight into the air - causing massive health problems for people in the surrounding area.

  • @extremefarts Random much?

  • @malbert34 Nuclear power is the way to go. Or we could always hook up 1000 BMWs, but they would only have enough power for a few light globes.

  • @randomsrvapps errr, no we don't! Since when? Show me a news article for proof, otherwise I won't believe you.

  • @EnvironVictoria

Brown coal ore contains 0.5%-0.2% of URANIUM & THORIUM over 5 METRIC TONNES of URANIUM is put into the air from hazelwood alone along with over 10 tonnes of thorium

not to mention the mercury and other heavy metals being dumped into the heavens and just happen to fall into hazelwood pondage

Not to mention this power station has upgraded the turbines and other extreamely expensive components to last 30 years from now there simply isn't enough supply to shut the plant down.

  • @malbert34 we already take the nuclear waste from china & scotland

  • Who needs electricity? We can power the world on lentils and self-importance!
