These same pennies will later be used by students to help their communities. "Common Cents," the non-profit sponsor of the program, believes that even our youngest citizens can spark extraordinary social change - if we simply give them the support they deserve.

It's $1million. Sadly, producing these pennies would cost the government $1.79million. If they were all pre-1982 pennies, the copper would be worth $2.58million. In 2008, US minted 5.4 billion pennies, at a loss of $43million.

Idiocy beyond all reason continues producing this worthless coin -- the United States Mint, Treasury, and Congress.
