Filmnet Central Europe: Promos Part 1 (1995)

Part 1 of 2

Promos of forthcoming movies for Filmnet's central European channel. Strangely this channel was entirely in English. They even had American announcers. Subtitles were available on teletext and there was an audio subccarrier for Polish Audio. Another break from the norm was this Filmnet service was in PAL and Videocrypt 2, rather than D2-MAC and Eurocrypt.

Videocrypt 2 was also used within one or two Sky channels on Astra analogue satellites at 19.2degE;Discovery/TCC/QVC and one or two others for subscription purposes within the Multichoice Kaleidescope pay-tv package.

Oh, and you're right about FilmNet being a magnet to some satellite-savvy viewers in Britain with it's porn that would be otherwise vetoed in the UK by the BBFC!

That is, Canal+ has once again concentrated on it's "original" markets: France, Wallonie (French Belgium), Poland and Spain.

In 1997 (IIRC) Multichoice, FilmNet's owner, was bought by Canal+, and all FN services (except FilmNet Hellas in Greece, which stayed independent) were re-branded Canal+.

More recently, Canal+ has sold all of those affilitates it had purchased from Multichoice to local shareholders in their respetcive countries.

FilmNet was launched by a Dutch consortium in 1985, and was aimed at Benelux and Northern Europe (later Eastern Europe with it's own service, this very one). All movies they showed were in their original English, with subtitles in the languages of the countries they targeted - via teletext, surely.

Dunno who gave you thumbs down for it, but it's true. It showed some films that hadn't even been shown on sky movies yet during the day and had some good quailty porn at night along with TV1000 when they both were broadcast on Astra back in the mid 90's.
