When calcium enters the cell there are multiple processes which are activated by the influx of calcium as a result of calcium binding to intracellular proteins. Synaptotagmin is involved in the late stages of vesicle fusion. Although synaptotagmin is required for normal functioning of many synapses, it is not essential, some say it is a negative regulator of spontaneous release.
This is not very reliable, plus the vague statements made in it are slightly incorrect. The calcium ions do not cause the binding, rather proteins found in the transport membranes detect the calcium levels, then initatate binding. Such as synaptotagmin.
