This lesson in love, compassion and the gift of giving is something we know you would like to report! It is the story of kids with little, giving to kids with everything to lose, their lives.
The 3rd grade team at Emerson Elementary in Snohomish thinks it is important that our community know what our kids are working this holiday season. We have been working on a community outreach program between children that focuses on the art of "paying it forward." We decided to help other children in our state who are battling Cancer and can't go to school, play outside or even live at home over the holidays. We have been accepting donations from the community to build Cancer Survival Kits for the children at Ronald McDonald house in Seattle. 80 third graders at Emerson Elementary will have a "Santa's Workshop" on Weds. December 9th from 1:00-3:00pm in the school gym. We will be using our donations from the community to build these Cancer Survival Kits. Baskets will include pillows, socks, hats, healthy snacks, encouraging letters, stationary, books, art supplies and anything else that our students felt would cheer up an incredibly sick child. We chose Ronald McDonald house children because many of the students we serve come from families who suffer economic hardships. Some of our students aren't having their basic needs met, much less receiving gifts this year. The human connection between these children of similar economic backgrounds is great, to say the least. Our students have worked hard to help children battling a disease the rest of us never want to experience. Our students created the gifting idea with the inspiration of a fellow teacher, Kim Moritz, who lost her Mother last year to Cancer. The students are collecting donations, working on construction of the gifts and learning the invaluable lesson of giving hope to those in need.
Please help us honor their dedication and commitment by sending a reporter and camera crew to Emerson Elementary on this special day.
On behalf of our students, the patients at Ronald McDonald House and those we've loved and lost to Cancer, thank you for seeing the importance of our story and sharing our kids heart warming gift this Holiday season.
Fondly,
Dana D. Oppelt
