"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Meade once commented. Dale Barter, a well known London vet surgeon leads a group of small shop owners in a fight against the council's decision (Islington Council) to sell off property to the highest bidder in a closed bidding process. The survival of small businesses in Amwell Street, Clerkenwell, a historic area of London is in jeopardy! Just imagine Brick Lane without the tens of Asian restaurants and tiny individual shops, or for that matter Germany's Frankfurt/Main without Bornheim ("Das lustige Dorf" means The Funny Village) with its lively charm and variety of local shops and traditional cider houses (Apfelwein)! If Islington Council get their way, small shops like CITY CLOCKS (one of the oldest clockmakers in London), WC & K KING CHEMISTS (established in 1839), AMWELL NEWS (utilities paypoint, newspapers) AMWELL BOOK CO. (quality second-hand books), BARBARA'S FLORIST, EMMA HOPE (hand made shoes), NATURALLY MYDDELTON'S (former Lloyds Dairy founded 1915) and others will meet their fate very soon. Independent shops are in steep decline not only in Britain but also in many other countries. Small shop owners are not able to compete with superior marketing and property development skills of large conglomerates. Local shops however provide expert knowledge of products and services to the community and create 'hubs' in the neighbourhoods. The vanishing of these specialist shops will mean less diversity, less communication and less interplay of interpersonal differences and ideas in the community. Make SAVING AMWELL STREET also your concern in your community!!

snobby little slob, go cry to mummy and daddy maybe they'll throw you some more money

  • You're clearly a left wing retard. Islington was better under socialist rule of Islington Labour was it! The party that bankrupted Islington and ruined our borough. Ha, you fool. Islington Lib Dems have done so much to improve the borough. And yeah, the yuppies/middle classes have definitely been the drivers of change for the good. You may not like it, but that's probably cause you live in a shite council flat and eat pot noodles you chav cunt.

  • it will be saved if enough yuppies live there. It's money islington council care about and not people - especially ones not well off
