Not many singers on TV could pull off an overture because it took up time but for Judy, it was the building of Momentum that made it work for her. It was part of her whole act. Just like the Judy bulbs on the runway it all worked perfectly for her. :)
Her remark about "Keep Your Sunny Side Up" is a caustic reference to her very first show, when everyone's hopes- especially hers- were high. She stopped "River" when she realized she transposed the lyric, "don't plant taters, don't plant cotton" to "don't plant cotton, don't plant taters" which won't rhyme with "forgotten" in the next line. Starting a TV show with an overture was a gamble... in many ways TJGS was daring, stylish, ahead of its time.
