Yes, They are also designed to be used at normal temperatures. Flush against a floor three bricks thick is way hotter than room temperature.
1. In salt kilns I have seen these blocks deteriorate apparently from heat although possibly from heat and salts. I believe that this is a more sound way of using these bricks in this application. Although the probelme can also be addressed by making sure there are open channels between bricks.
Your use may vary.
Thanks

Aren't concrete blocks designed so that the openings face up?

Cool, Thanks. Say Hi to Richard. I have some plans for this kiln, It has a rather large interior for 24" shelves but we use the space well.

Great video! Where was that magic when I built my soda kiln? As I recall it was a lot of work, but very satisfying at the same time.
If anyone wants plans for a downdraft soda kiln (could be glaze kiln too) see my website. Search "Cuzick" I also do not warrant it, but it works for me and SDSU.

A materials list would be awesome also some measurement infos would be great as well although i would prefer to make one like this design but a little bit smaller. =)

I have a materials list. I do not warrant anything about it build at your own risk. But it works well for us we fire it almost weekly during the long semesters once things get rolling. louiskatz aett yah........daht com
Fantastic! I can't decide wich I like better... The kiln or the video. Nice job on both! 5 stars:)

Thanks. I would do the bracing on the front differently. I have made the same mistake before. The brace across the top interferes with the stacking of the door. The kiln is holding up well although we work it hard. I love the burners.Thanks.
