"Star Trek" (1966-69) was the first cult TV show saved by syndication. Fan pressure prompted network to put re-runs of the show's 79 episodes into syndication. By 1977, after 8 years in syndication, "Star Trek" was airing in 134 U.S. markets & 131 overseas, 308 times a week. It was the #1 off-network show for men, 18-49. Publicity prompted new fan base to emerge. Paramount became preeminent TV syndicator based on success of this show.
