It's October 9, 1492. You're back aboard the Santa Maria--in the middle of a raging storm!

Talk of mutiny is put aside as the men try madly to save the ship. The wind howls. Rain beats down. Huge waves crash onto the deck.

You see Scarpio trying to tie down some gear. Wading through the water, you hurry to help him.

Suddenly there's a loud ripping sound. Part of the big sail has torn loose! The first mate stumbles over. He yells to make himself heard.

"Scarpio! You and the deck helper get up there! Tie off that loose canvas. Hurry, before the whole sail tears to pieces!"

Scarpio yanks your sleeve. He starts up the rope ladder, which is fastened to the mast. You follow close behind.

Boom! Crash!

The waves smash against the wooden sides of the Santa Maria. The ship pitches and tosses as you go higher and higher. You've made this climb before, but always in calm weather. Now, in the blinding rain, you can't even see where you're going. The ropes are slippery and you're having trouble hanging on.

The ship gives a sudden lurch. The mast sways. You lose your grip and over you go!

"Help! Help! Scarpio!"

You yell as loudly as you can, but your voice is lost in the howling wind.

You start to swim. But it's hard work keeping your head above the waves. Your clothes weigh you down. Soon your arms get tired. Then you begin swallowing water.

Worse and worse! Your head is spinning. You can't do anything but stay afloat and hope for a miracle.

For a moment the storm lets up; through the haze, you think you see a ship. Is is real? Or something your weary mind has created? No--it's the Nina, wallowing along behind the other ships!

Are you too tired to reach her? With your last ounce of strength, you head slowly toward the Nina.
