You Give Love a Bad Name
Rabbi Yehudah ben Shomeyr

Ironic how YHWH can and will speak to you through secular and worldly things. I am about to date myself with this next statement. The old 80s Bon Jovi it You Give Love a Bad Name, just popped into my head out of the blue today and immediately followed it was this thought.

I John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Then I mused how we should be imitators of Him.

Eph. 5:1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children.

And that we are to be His disciples and be known by such love.

John 13:34-35 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

So by not showing love as HE does, we give Love/G-d a bad Name, hence breaking the Commandment of not taking His Name in vain (Exd. 20:7, Deut. 5:11).

My mind then went to a woman I know who is self righteous and proclaims publicly and often, I am a Christian! Yet virtually in the next breath she begins to gossip or slander someone behind their back. Talk about, Shot through the heart, and your to blame, you give Love a band name!

This goes back to the Golden Rule and how Love is really a verb more so than an emotion.

Do to others as you would have them do to you Yeshua, Matthew 7:12

Yeshua didnt make this up; he learned this from Rabbis and Sages growing up. For a Sage around the same time who was the founder of one of two schools of Jewish thought named Hillel is recorded as saying in the Talmud, the compendium of Jewish Law:

What is hateful to you, do not unto your neighbor. This is the whole Torah; the rest is just commentary. Go and learn it. Hillel, Talmud, Shabbath 31a

The Talmud also says in various ways that acting, doing is more important than thinking or feeling.

Yeshua also said:

Matt. 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

By what fruits?

Gal. 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Talk is cheap, actions speak louder than words, are we loving and bearing such fruit? Or are we bearing worm infested persimmons?

Yeshua warns:

Matt. 3:10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Matt. 7:17-20 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither [can] a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fireWherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Matt. 12:33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by [his] fruit.

There is an old saying from Christianity that I think is safe to cross over into Natsari Judaism and that is the secret to true JOY is a matter of priority:

J.O.Y.

J- Jesus (Yeshua)
O- Others
Y- You

Also, the word Joy in Hebrew also gives us a priority just as vital to have True Joy.

Simcha is the Hebrew word for joy; spelled Shin, Mem, Chet. Take these three Hebrew letters, switch them around and your get, Chumash, a Hebrew word for the number five and an idiom for the five books of Torah. Switch the letters again and you get Moshiach (Messiah). So True Joy come from obeying the Written Torah and Living Torah, which is none other than Yeshua the Messiah (John 1).

So if youre ever flipping the dials on your radio and hear this Bon Jovi song, please let it me a reminder of the very thing the Ruach Hakodesh (Holy Spirit) told me today.
