"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaims to the world that this church is a restoration of Christ's church. A restoration was necessary because prophets and Apostles, who were the foundation of the Lord's original church, were put to death or otherwise taken. The Church today is built on a foundation of prophets and Apostles, with Jesus Christ as its chief cornerstone. It is therefore not a reformation, a revision, a reorganization, or a mere sect. It is the Church of Jesus Christ restored in these latter days. "A distinguishing feature of the Church is the claim to continuous revelation from the Lord—'the making known of divine truth by communications from its heavens.' (James E. Talmage, The Articles of Faith, 12th ed., Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1924, p. 296.) Today, the Lord's church is guided by the same relationship with Deity that existed in previous dispensations. "This claim is not made lightly. I know there is revelation, as I am a witness to sacred things also experienced by others who administer His work."

Faith and character are intimately related. Faith in the power of obedience to the commandments of God will forge strength of character available to you in times of urgent need. Such character is not developed in moments of great challenge or temptation.

Teamwork is another lesson learned. "Having control over what you do – I missed that. But it taught me to rely on others. It's not just you, you, you."

A good work ethic is something else he's taken away. "The hard days helped you appreciate the good days, but the hard days keep you humble. You have to work for it," Wheaton said.

This had begun an inexorable process -- notably furthered by Darwin and Freud -- demonstrating to rational thinkers that humans have no special cosmic status. Rather, we are insignificant products of chance, thrown up by a universe that cares nothing for us or, for that matter, anything else.

More specifically, I was taught that the so-called "Copernican Revolution," which made the sun rather than the earth the center of our solar system, had displaced humanity from the privileged place in the universe where religious superstition had put us.

Containing more than 50,000 emigrant names, the database provides full-text transcriptions of nearly 3,200 Mormon Trail narratives — diaries, recollections, correspondence and newspaper reports.

One obvious reason for the association's interest in the database is that the Mormon, Oregon and California trails coincide in some portions.

And although it was crowded, she wasn't frightened. She felt a "spirit of humanity, of love and respect."
