@DjembeDjam The sun dries the skin causing it to shrink and tighten,just like your skin when you spend too much time in the sun. That is to say that the goat skin on the djembe holds moisture, just like any other skin. So the sun or fire or any other dry heat source will tighten a skin slightly by causing the moisture to evaporate. If you wet the skin or leave it to soak in water,it becomes rubbery/soft. Metal expands, while skin contracts, when heated.
