STS-121 Space Shuttle Disovery-slijetanje na pistu u svemirskom centru Kennedy na Floridi.
17.07.2006.
16:15 (HR vrijeme)

Zapovjednik...Steve Lindsey
Pilot....Mark Kelly
Specijalisti misije:
Mike Fossum, Lisa Nowak, Stephanie Wilson, Piers Sellers, Thomas Reiter

Commander....Steve Lindsey
Pilot....Mark Kelly
Mission Specialists:
Mike Fossum, Lisa Nowak, Stephanie Wilson, Piers Sellers, Thomas Reiter

The crew of Space Shuttle Discovery tested new equipment and procedures that increase the safety of space shuttles during the STS-121 mission to the International Space Station. It also performed maintenance on the space station and delivered supplies, equipment and a new Expedition 13 crew member to the station.

This mission carried on analysis of safety improvements that debuted on the Return to Flight mission, STS-114, and built upon those tests.

  • The space shuttle program and technology is very good and probably second to none. It is irresponsible for NASA to discontinue it by 2010 and going backwards to rocket launching technology. NASA wake up; technology moves forwards, not backwards.

  • "No bucks, no Buck Rogers"...says the old quote.

Also shuttle is very vulnerable during re-entry because of those tiles for thermal protection .

Now, after Columbia disaster, they spent whole 3 days of flight for checking them.

  • No bucks? Then the US authorities must be liars. They could spend billions on wars, donate billions to world causes and recently spends trillions to fix the (credit crunch economy) and no bucks for the space shuttle program or to improve heat shield (or design) technology? Even the rocket command module is also very vulnerable during re entry and there had also been past disasters associated either with terrestial testings or flight reentries. There are dark forces at work.

  • When most of people learn difference between astronomy and astrology then will be possible to find money for vehicle(s) like Space Shuttle....maybe!

Thermal shield protection for capsules like Apollo or Orion isn't so complex like this one for shuttle.

Just check first shuttle missions here on YT and you will see that even new Columbia orbiter (at that time) had problems with those thermal tiles and blankets.Lots of them just drop off after launch.

    Obviously bad design.

  • I also agree that Constellation project and similar is step backward in space vehicle design/usage.

In vehicle like Space Shuttle pilot role is really pilot role.

Anyhow just five more flights of shuttle and that's it...end of story. :-(

  • hey the space shuttle just landed safely today! (march 27th 2009) :)

  • yes, yes :) STS-119 Discovery

  • iS IT possible to do a go-around whith the shuttle, or os it no room for error?

  • NASA is going with a rocket and capsule design because after 28 years of the shuttle, it has become blatantly obvious that the shuttle is MUCH MUCH more expensive to operate than originally thought. We here at NASA have learned that for going back to the moon, a step towards rockets and capsules is moving forward, not backwards. A shuttle type design is not thought to be capable of making it happen. Learn the facts before you foolishly offer advice to the worlds finest space agency.

  • Looks like Lisa Nowak.

  • I think the heat tiling shield of the space shuttle were deliberately made to be 'very complex' and highly vulnerable with a huge potential for disastrous consequences for inflated economic benefits. There are probably relatively low tech and highly durable heat shield materials that can be made to 'mold fit' the space shuttle than thousands of pieces of bull crappy tiles. The space shuttle program was made to appear complex in order to 'justify' its expense with huge potential consequencies.
