2011-12-25 UPDATE: The latest 4.0.2.A.0.62 build CANNOT be rooted UNLESS you have an unlocked bootloader. (The exploit has been patched.) HOWEVER flashing build .42 and updating over the air to .62 maintains root, like previous builds.

In this video, I show how to root ANY Xperia phone running ANY v2.2/v2.3 firmware with DooMLoRD's zergRush exploit. (Original developer thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582 READ IT!)

If the DOS version doesn't work, download SuperOneClick, which now supports zergRush: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

[Sorry about the camera work. Was using a tripod and had to shift back and forth.]

This has been confirmed working on the following devices: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18805560#post18805560

Rooting is completely OPTIONAL.
It allows you to install applications that modify the phone:
- BusyBox & Titanium Backup (to remove any application)
XDA Developers - List of safe applications to remove: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047689
- AdFree
- install themes, new icons, boot screens, etc.
- etc.

It does NOT make the Market free (seriously, you think Google would have a security hole/bug like this???).
It does NOT de-brand your phone (e.g. remove carrier apps, logo).
It does NOT unlock your bootloader or relock it.
It does NOT unlock a SIM/network phone or relock it.
If you do not modify any system files, you will still continue to receive firmware updates if your firmware is updated by Sony.

If for some reason, you need to un-root, visit the un-root thread, download the un-root kit and run it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18879974#post18879974 (un-root ONLY works if you rooted with zergRush. Do NOT use it if you rooted using another method. You WILL mess up the firmware and need to flash again. You have been warned.)

I also show how to use the FREE Wotan Server software to flash the Xperia arc to the latest v2.3.4 build 4.0.2.A.42 firmware (North America generic). For a video specifically on using Wotan Server, watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQIw608rZfI&hd=1

Wotan Client v3.40 with the US arc v2.3.2 firmware files already included: http://www.multiupload.com/9JT2JZ4P7I
Wotan Client v3.40 with the US arc v2.3.4 firmware files already included: http://www.multiupload.com/L5BO5GOLK7

If you're flashing using Wotan Server, remember:
Your phone does NOT have to be rooted (flashing wipes EVERYTHING annyways).
Your bootloader does NOT have to be unlocked (it also does NOT unlock or relock your bootloader).
It does NOT SIM/network unlock your phone. It does NOT re-lock your phone if your phone is already unlocked.

WARNING: DO NOT downgrade from v2.3.4 back to v2.3.3 or v2.3.2 or you may experience the 0% battery issue. XDA threads with help regarding the 0% battery issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18913335#post18913335

As always, before flashing your phone, BACKUP all your data: APN/3G settings (use the free APN Backup & Restore available on the Market), SMS, contacts, etc.

You MUST have PC Companion installed or else your computer will not recognize the phone. Update Service is also recommended. If it isn't available at Sony, download from my mirror: http://jp1.ca/androidstuff which also contains useful Android applications such as SMS & APN Backup, etc.

NOTE: Flashing an "i" firmware onto an "a" phone will NOT give you 3G in an "i" zone (only 3G in an "a" zone). Flashing an "a" firmware onto an "i" phone will NOT give you 3G in an "a" zone (only 3G in an "i" zone). The radios are FIXED and not changable through firmware.

All v2.x firmwares will work on ANY phone. i.e. if you want German customization, you can flash the German arc firmware onto your North American arc. 3G will still work (in North America) once you enter in your APN settings.

APN Settings (3G/3.5G/H Internet) for Rogers, AT&T: http://pastebin.com/jNse0tpf

If anything goes wrong, use PC Companion, Update Service, the FlashTool, or Wotan to flash the phone again.

  • "It does NOT make the Market free (seriously, you think Google would have a security hole/bug like this???)."

Search for applanet. Appstore for android with ca all apps, all for free.

  • @RoteXoR It's an alternative market - which still doesn't make the official Android Market free. And given the amount of malware out there, I wouldn't be installing apps not vetted.

  • system cannot find....

  • @cj3win Find what?

Are you in the right folder? Are you running as Admin?

    Download SuperOneClick. It's graphical.
