Here is "Battle Zone" shown on the Mattel Electronics Aquarius computer. It was marketed as "3D Battle Zone" to advertise the rare 3D perspective used in the game.

This game was made in Europe after Mattel had already paid Radofin to take back the marketing rights.

Battle Zone is one of the most sophisticated third party titles created for the Aquarius. The music, sound effects, and graphics combine together for a fun, if repetetive game.

I can tell you from first hand experience, that real war does not have such a catchy soundtrack. ;-)

In the video, you'll see me probe the naval forces, and determine their lack of lethality. From there, I focus in on the more dangerous armored forces. They are deadly accurate and relentless, yet I give the tanks a good walloping. Luckily for me, the enemy airforce seems to be involved in some sort of aerial race, so they pay me no attention. Once in a while, I'll down a plane, just to thin their forces, and damage morale. ;-)

  • I waited for years for the intellivion add-on computer then they announced the aquarius, I'm pretty sure these are 2 different products.

Anyway, I would be pretty pissed even back in 82-83 playing this 3D battel tank. It looks horrible.

  • @kruncytheklown Thanks for the comment. Yes, the Aquarius is completely separate from the Intelly Keyboard component. Mattel abandoned that project for the less ambitious & less capable ECS attachment for the Intelly (Enhanced Computer System). While you may have been disappointed by this game, I think you are missing a couple points: 1) This isn't a first party title. It was likely made by a 1-man operation in England. 2) You are forgetting many games that were much worse than this! ;-)

  • I agree that the song is quite catchy. Only three Mattel cartridges had music: Snafu, BurgerTime, & Melody Chase. The European cassette software seemed to make much better use of the Aquarius Mini-Expander sound capabilities.

  • You seem to be forgetting Thunder Castle and Commando?

  • Oops, you seem to be confusing the Aquarius with the Intellivision. ;-)
