In the Summer of 1985, about to enter my senior year of high school in Marshfield, Mass., I was fortunate to be accepted into the National High School Institute's journalism program on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

By the way, all NSHI students are dubbed "cherubs," a tradition dating back generations.

Anyway, the program was a life-changer, leading me to enroll at NU the next year, where I met my wife, got a journalism degree...and the rest is Chicago-area history.

This video clip is in response to a request from a Cherub instructor, Sarahmaria Gomez, seeking videotaped words of advice for a video compilation she showed to this year's students at the start of their five-week session.
