Militainment, Inc. offers a fascinating, disturbing, and timely glimpse into the militarization of American popular culture, examining how U.S. news coverage has come to resemble Hollywood film, video games, and "reality television" in its glamorization of war. Mobilizing an astonishing range of media examples - from news anchors' idolatry of military machinery to the impact of government propaganda on war reporting - the film asks: How has war taken its place in the culture as an entertainment spectacle? And how does presenting war as entertainment affect the ability of citizens to evaluate the necessity and real human costs of military action? The film is broken down into nine sections, each between 10 and 20 minutes in length, allowing for in-depth classroom analysis of individual elements of this wide-ranging phenomenon.

Written, produced & narrated by Roger Stahl
Based on his forthcoming book by the same title.

Roger Stahl is Assistant Professor of Speech Communication at the University of Georgia. His work has appeared in publications such as Rhetoric and Public Affairs, Encyclopedia of Political Communication, and Critical Studies in Media Communication.

  • try reading "1984" by George Orwell. I find it disturbing that a popular game series, "Call of Duty" started by letting you play "the good guys" of wwii the russians, british and americans, and in the latest sequel has become a modern war game. All modern war PC games are rather disturbing. The dead haven't even begun to rot and we act like they never were.

  • The fact that the US Army has released it's own PC game and is continuing to update it with the newest most sophisticated software is quite worrying. The world seems to get more and more like the fascism depicted in Star Ship Troopers.

  • Oh, I forgot the most important characteristic wanted in a new recruit...THAT HE BE FROM A POOR,LOWER CLASS FAMILY... since we all know that the sons of wealthy Americans should not be sent to die in a bloody and immoral war..if they were..who would be left to run the country..the poor white and ghetto trash from the lower class?

  • Most young American men r pretty damn stupid n naive-I say that from 20yrs of teachingmorons n colleges where it's easy 2 see that most students get ALL of their facts n opinions from Jew TV.This stupidity of youth is what the US military looks for in a recruit-someone who won't ask questions, has no personal criteria of their own,has never learned 2 think n analyze critically,is afraid of being seen as unpatriotic,is stupid enough 2 believe thatbecause someoneis n officerthat hemust b smarter.

  • Also, watch the vid of Iraq vets about their experiences at IVAW dottie organ

  • There's nothing wrong with being in the armed services. It's just that our policies right now are forcing many young people into war crimes they may have to give an account for later. As long as you can get out when you want, i.e. non-commissioned officer, etc. vs. enlisting, where they basically can order you to do something that's illegal.

  • I'm a foreign born A student that got a full scholarship in a prestigious university in the USA, and I still want to sign up in the US marine corps. Maybe I am brainwashed. Who knows?

  • but we need to go further. we need to educate those sucked up into the media propaganda, and esp. those most vulnerable - kids at high schools, wanting to go to college w/ no $, and maybe not an A student.

  • We do have choices. We do not have to be a part of it. I threw out my TV, and I do not buy mainstream newspapers or magazines, and I would never buy violent toys, which are created to mind-wash kids so they'll willingly fight the elites' wars for resources.

  • we need to drop their world right now!
